Thinking about becoming a certified diver? You’re in the right place.
At Aquatica Underwater Adventures, we specialize in guiding beginners through their first dives—and many of them go on to earn their SSI Open Water Diver certification right here in Puerto Rico.
If you’re curious about what this certification is, what it allows you to do, and why Puerto Rico is one of the best places to earn it, this guide has you covered.
What Is the SSI Open Water Diver Certification?
The SSI (Scuba Schools International) Open Water Diver certification is your passport to the underwater world. It’s the most recognized entry-level certification in recreational scuba diving.
Once you’re certified, you can:
- Dive independently with a buddy (no instructor needed)
- Rent gear and book dive trips around the world
- Dive to a depth of up to 60 feet (18 meters)
- Continue training with specialties or advanced courses
It’s a lifetime certification, and it opens the door to exploring reefs, wrecks, and marine life across the globe.
What’s Included in the Course?
Our SSI Open Water Diver course includes three key parts:
1. Online Learning (Done at Your Own Pace)
You’ll start with easy-to-follow digital lessons that cover:
- Dive theory (pressure, buoyancy, etc.)
- Equipment and safety protocols
- Planning and managing dives
You can complete this on your own schedule before you arrive, or knock it out at our shop with Wi-Fi and AC.
2. Confined Water Training
This is where you’ll get hands-on practice in shallow water, usually right off one of our calm, sandy beaches in Aguadilla. You’ll learn:
- How to assemble and use your gear
- Underwater communication and safety signals
- Basic skills like mask clearing, buoyancy control, and more
3. Open Water Dives
Once you’ve mastered the basics, we’ll take you on four real ocean dives at beautiful, beginner-friendly sites. You’ll get to explore coral reefs, meet some marine life, and put everything you’ve learned into action—while your instructor stays by your side.
Why Get Certified in Puerto Rico?
☀️ Year-Round Warm Water
No cold shocks here. The water is warm, tropical, and easy to stay in for long training sessions.
🌊 Gentle Conditions & Great Visibility
Most of our training sites are calm, protected bays or shallow reefs with minimal currents—ideal for first-time divers. Visibility is often excellent, giving you clear views and added comfort.
🐠 Incredible Marine Life
Why learn in a pool when you can learn alongside sea turtles, rays, and schools of tropical fish? Every training dive feels like an adventure.
🏝️ A Vacation You’ll Actually Remember
Combine your training with a laid-back getaway in Aguadilla. Dive in the morning, then relax on the beach, grab some local food, or explore the coast.
Who Can Take the Course?
To get certified, you must:
- Be at least 10 years old
- Be able to swim 200 meters and float for 10 minutes
- Be in good general health (we’ll provide a medical form to review)
No prior dive experience is required—and we’ll guide you every step of the way.
